At The Well, we affirm that God's scope for reconciling all things to himself includes all nations and people groups (Colossians 1:20). Since the beginning of time, God intended to live among his people. After the rebellion of human beings (Genesis 3), God promised one who would come to destroy sin and death (Genesis 3:15), one through whom all people groups would be blessed (Genesis 12:1-4; Galatians 3:8).
Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, has reconciled us to the Father by forgiving our sins and has called us to proclaim the good news throughout all the earth (Matthew 28:19-20). God has entrusted to us the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:20)!
We Love the Nations
We Love the Nations exists to mobilize our congregation to fulfill the great commission locally and abroad. We believe the Great Commission is not fulfilled by missionaries alone, but it's a collective effort that involves the local church at large. Everyone has a role, and everyone has something to contribute in reaching the nations!
Our efforts to mobilize our congregation to the nations is based in relationships with individuals, teams, or organizations overseas. We want to be a Spirit-led congregation, who is committed to the longevity of missionary work, focusing on making disciples, not just converts, for God’s glory and fame!
These relationships are pivotal to mobilizing our congregation, as they are the ones doing the work on the ground. Whether you have a conviction to move overseas in the long term, or are looking to explore some short term opportunities, reach out to our missions minister at santi@thewellabilene.com.
Avenues to Get Involved
Pray for the Nations:
Every Tuesday, we gather at 7:00 a.m. to pray for various nations and their missionaries. This is a great time to stay up to date on whom we support, the kind of needs/celebrations they have, and a chance to advocate for them with prayer.
30 Days of Prayer for Muslims:
Every year, typically around February to March, billions of people observe Ramadan, a month-long fast during which Muslims praise their god, Allah, for revealing the Quran. Every year, we take the 30 days to pray for Muslims. We pray that Muslims would be released from submission to Allah, to follow a new king: Jesus!
Soccer:
Soccer is a global phenomenon! It is an excellent way of connecting with foreigners in our city. Every afternoon on Saturdays, we gather to play soccer at Redbud Park. Every game, we share about God’s heart for redemption and have a good time playing soccer together. This is a great avenue to love people who are sojourners in our land. All skill levels welcomed, even kids (10+).
Gospel Fluency:
Every year after Spring Break, we take 7-8 weeks to learn tools to reach the lost with the Gospel. Throughout Gospel Fluency, we learn and practice how to identify, witness, and disciple the lost.
IRC (International Rescue Committee):
Abilene has a substantial population of refugees who have had to flee their countries seeking safety. We are given an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus, and love the sojourners who come from afar (Leviticus 19:33-34). The IRC offers different ways we can get involved with refugees in our city.
Missions Guided Studies:
We have guided studies that walk you through God’s heart and love for the nations. These kinds of resources are perfect if you want to use them in a GC setting, individually or with family/roommates/friends.
English as a Second Language (ESL):
We offer English as a Second Language classes for people who are seeking to learn English. This is another avenue to love those who sojourn among us, and build relational capital to display the hope of the Gospel to those who don't know it. If you are certified in ESL, reach out to see ways to get involved.
Adopt an International Student:
Every year, we have international students move to Abilene due to the different universities here. We are looking for families who are willing to welcome and host students for holidays and meals.
Hendrick International Nurses:
Recently, Abilene has seen an influx of international medical workers who are working for Hendrick. Like everything else, it's another avenue to build relationships with our neighbors and display to them the good news in words and deeds.
Van Driver:
Volunteer to drive international students to church on Sundays.
Missions Weekender
Every Fall semester, we plan to host a weekend conference revolving around international missions. This is an effort to provide further clarity on the practical implications on how to get involved in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).
For any questions on how to get involved, email santi@thewellabilene.com or go to the missions table in the lobby.
